Grain Brain by David Perlmutter
We’re finally starting to realize that we eat too many carbs. This book links a carb-heavy diet with brain health, and it’s not just refined carbs either. In other words, according to Perlmutter, too much multi-grain bread, or even fruit, causes ADHD, dementia, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, mood disorders, and many more brain-related illnesses. I read it because I’m bipolar, but I think there’s something in it for everyone.
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
I’ve read this book before, years ago, but rereading it recently helped to pull me out of a depressive episode. It’s Plath’s semi-autobiographical account of her own depression and time spent in a mental health institution where she received electroshock therapy. If only Plath herself had been able to read about somebody else’s mental health problems back in 1963, maybe she would have felt equally comforted and inspired.
Asterix by René Goscinny
My two boys, ages eight and eleven, love these books. So much so that they’ll watch the movie on Netflix in French, a language they don’t speak. They’ve both been rereading the whole series lately, something they do every time they’re reminded of their old favourites.
Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin
Some girls love princesses, others love unicorns, for my daughter it’s worms. Worms. My five-year-old daughter is crazy about worms. Thanks to her brothers she also loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid, so when she saw Diary of a Worm at the library she was instantly smitten. She memorized it within days; her favourite part is the worm hokey-pokey.
12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson
A lot of conversations with Ernie these days revolve around JBP. So much so that when our eight year-old said the name “Jordan Peterson,” our five year-old corrected him by inserting JP’s middle initial. They’ve been paying attention. Peterson has a podcast and gives advice based on his career as a clinical psychologist and professor. I haven’t read this book yet but I’ll give it a go as soon as Ernie’s done.
